HEMO THE MAGNIFICENT

Awhile ago I wrote about my hometown not having a movie theatre and that sometimes we watched old movies at the Kelley High auditorium on weekends - sponsored by the Letterman's club, the Science Club, Future Teachers, etc. to raise money.

Today I'll write a few words about  Hemo the Magnificent.   After a too-large meal, or when I'm over-tired by too much exercise (a rare experience), or when I'm just trying to do to many things at one time - I flash on the picture of a frantic telephone switchboard operator in my brain.  The image comes from Hemo.  Each year - 4th, 5th and 6th grades (early 1960s) we sat on the polished floor of the Campton Gym to view this movie.  For those who haven't seen it, it's a funny and educational film about the working of the human body - particularly the heart.  It's a combination of live action and animation - I would say a film way ahead of its time.

A few years ago I put the title into the Amazon search site.  I learned it was released on videotape in 1991.   Reading some of the reviews that had been posted on the site, I  learned that  Campton was not alone in showing this movie so often - that baby boomers across the country viewed Hemo the Magnificent at their schools multiple times - and loved it.

Many reasons for commenting on your blogs which I have been negligent in reading the past few days. First, you do have an excellent memory and mine is totally blank on some of these experiences. I went to Campton with you all those years and do not remember Hemo the Magnificent! I remember you in thse operettas which I hope you address sometime and other odds and ends, but nothing as clearly as you recall our growing up. Secondly, I knew you lived in those 3 houses in Silver Bay, but I knew nothing of the strikes or work stoppage, or that you moved away so many times. I just pictured you moving from one right into the other. I'm thinking that the fact that you were sort of an "only child" your parents treated you as a miniature adult, and I being the third of four, got lost in the shuffle! The last reason for commenting is that I got a very unusual package in the mail today, the mysterious birthday surprise, which it definitely was! I thought is was an outfit I ordered for Jada so we opened it together. Out fell a very heavy box with the word "Zero" all over it and I still thought it was the outfit packed tightly into a box. Then it dawned on me and I had a flashback to the long ago trips to the laundromat! I was so excited and a little anxious to try one for fear that it wouldn't be as good as I remembered it, but not to worry, it brought back a flood of happy thoughts and impressions and I enjoyed every bite! So thanks for the special treat for my BIG ends in "zero" birthday!

Sue,
You're the one that remembered the laundromat vending machine had Zeros and 7up bars with that horrid jelly filling!
